Using Claude Code for SEO: A Real Workflow That Actually Works

What Claude Code Is Actually Good At in an SEO Context

SEO work splits into two parts: the strategic decisions that require human judgment, and the repetitive execution work that does not. Claude Code is not going to tell you which keywords to target or whether your content strategy is sound. But it is genuinely useful for the execution layer — the work that takes time but does not require much thought.

The workflow that actually works involves identifying which SEO tasks in your process are rule-based and repetitive, then handing those to Claude Code while you handle the parts that require actual strategy.

Site Audit

Most SEO workflows start with an audit. You crawl your site, identify issues, prioritize fixes. Claude Code can help here by reading your site structure and generating a prioritized issue list.

The approach: give Claude Code access to your site pages or sitemap, ask it to identify common SEO issues — missing meta descriptions, thin content, broken internal links, duplicate titles. It works through your pages systematically and produces a list you can act on.

The limitation: Claude Code will catch the mechanical issues. It will not catch the strategic issues — whether your content is actually targeting the right intent, whether your site architecture makes sense for how users navigate it, whether your thin content pages are worth keeping or should be consolidated. Those require human analysis.

Content Optimization

Once you have pages to optimize, Claude Code can help with the content layer. Give it the target keyword, the current content, and ask for specific improvement suggestions. It will identify where the content does not address the search intent clearly, where headings could be structured better, where the word count is thin relative to the competition.

The key is being specific about what you want. "Improve this for SEO" gets you generic suggestions. "The target keyword is 'best coffee makers for small offices'. Tell me specifically where the current content fails to address that intent and what sentences to add or change." gets you useful output.

Meta Description Generation

Meta descriptions are tedious to write well and easy to write badly. Claude Code handles them at scale without the quality degradation that comes from humans writing the hundredth meta description after getting bored.

Give it a page's title, H1, and a one-sentence description of the page's purpose. Ask for three meta description options at different lengths — short for cases where the SERP cuts it off, standard length, longer variant for pages where you want more context in the snippet. Pick the one that fits your needs rather than writing from scratch.

Rank Tracking Queries

For ongoing rank tracking, you can build a workflow that uses Claude Code to process your position data. If you have a spreadsheet of keyword positions over time, feed it to Claude Code and ask it to identify which keywords gained ground, which dropped, and which warrant investigation.

This replaces the manual look-at-every-row process that most people skip because it takes too long. Claude Code does it in seconds and tells you specifically which rankings changed and by how much.

What to Keep Human

The SEO work that benefits from Claude Code is the execution layer — audits, content improvements, meta descriptions, data processing. The strategic layer — which keywords to target, what content to create, how to structure your site for crawlability and conversion — still needs human judgment.

The way this breaks down in practice: use Claude Code for the work that would otherwise not get done because it is too tedious. Keep humans focused on the work where their judgment actually changes outcomes.
