Claude Opus 4.5: Context, Reasoning, and When to Use It
Still Relevant in 2026
Opus 4.5 is the previous generation flagship. It has been superseded by Opus 4.6 and 4.7, but it is still a strong model for tasks that do not require the latest generation's improvements. If you are using Opus 4.5 for existing workflows, there is no urgent reason to migrate unless you are hitting its limits.
Capability Profile
Opus 4.5 handles reasoning tasks well. The context window is large — sufficient for most codebase-scale tasks. On benchmarks, it sits above Sonnet models and below the Opus 4.x generation. The gap to Opus 4.7 is most visible on hard reasoning tasks and at high context utilization.
When to Use Opus 4.5
Use it when it is what you already have running — existing workflows, existing infrastructure. If you are choosing between starting fresh on Opus 4.5 vs 4.7, prefer 4.7 for hard tasks. But if you have an established Claude Code setup running on Opus 4.5, it is still producing good results on most tasks.
Upgrade Path
If you are on Opus 4.5 and hitting limits on hard reasoning tasks, move to Opus 4.6 or 4.7. The upgrade is seamless — same API interface, same Claude Code integration. Test your existing prompts on the new model to see where outcomes improve.
